Manchester United Dominates, Then Hangs On, in Opening Victory

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM (MAY 28, 2026) – Powered by a first-half hat trick by Elisabeth Terland, Manchester United defeated West Ham, 5-4, to open their second pursuit of a World Sevens Football crown.

The nine total goals set a record for the most combined tallies in a W7F match.

In the opening 15 minutes, the Red Devils looked very much like a side that had done this before, having finished second in the inaugural World Sevens Football tournament. The first half was stuffed with scoring, featuring a combined six goals from the two sides — and a triptych of masterpieces from Norwegian striker Elisabeth Terland that helped Manchester United to a 5-1 rout.

Melvine Malard started things off for the Red Devils in the sixth minute, firing a long shot that deflected just under the crossbar. The Red Devils doubled their advantage a minute later when Simi Awujo sent a perfect cross to Terland, who one-timed the ball at the left post.

Malard extended the Manchester United lead to 3-0 in the eighth minute when she found herself alone in the West Ham penalty box. She juked Hammers netminder Kinga Szemik before sliding the ball into the back of the net to complete a brace.

Terland picked up her second in the ninth minute. Szemik made an outstanding save on Terland’s first attempt and almost stopped the follow-on try as well, but the ball just bounced over the line to extend the Red Devils’ margin to 4-0.

Ffion Morgan started the Hammer’s comeback attempt in the 10th minute, heading the ball in at the left post on a curling cross from Riko Ueki. The tally brought West Ham back to within three – but they would not succeed in sustaining their momentum. Terland finished off her first-half hat-trick with a score in the 13th minute, running onto a cutback pass in the penalty box and drilling a no-doubter past Szemik.

West Ham looked much more composed in the second half, scoring three times and coming within one of forcing overtime.

Morgan completed her own brace with a beauty of a strike from just outside the penalty box in the 17th minute, giving the Hammers new life in the opening moments of the second half.

Ueki then brought West Ham within two with a brilliant headed finish at the left post, directing the ball into the ground into the right side of the net. The score cut the Manchester United lead to 5-3 in the 26th minute.

Eva Nyström put a real scare into the Red Devils with another tally in the 28th minute. The Finnish centre-back trapped the ball at the top of the penalty box and then dribbled to her left before shocking her opponents – and the crowd – with a score that made a seemingly invulnerable Manchester United forced to defend up just one.

West Ham made a charge in the final minute, but it was ultimately too little, too late.
