Chelsea Takes Opening Match of London Edition in Overtime Thriller

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM (MAY 28, 2026) – In a match that always seemed destined for overtime, striker Aggie Beever-Jones scored a brace to lift Chelsea to a 4-3 triumph in the opening match of World Sevens Football London Edition at Gtech Community Stadium.

With the clubs down to five players each in the added period, Beever-Jones tapped in the match-winner off of a pass from Lauren James to give Chelsea the sudden-death victory in the 33rd minute.

Everton came into the second half with a 2-1 lead, but the ensuing 15 minutes were fast and furious, with momentum swinging between the sides constantly.

Beever-Jones didn’t wait long after the second-half whistle to put Chelsea level, poaching a rebound after a shot by Sjoeke Nüsken left Brosnan out of position in the 17th minute.

Nüsken thrilled the crowd with a go-ahead goal in the 20th minute, receiving a through pass from James into the Everton box before launching a rocket into the upper-left corner for the 3-2 Chelsea lead.

But Katja Snoeijs was not going to let the Toffees go down easily, however. She pierced the Chelsea defense with a cross from the right side that landed perfectly at Hikaru Kitagawa’s feet for a one-timed finish, tying the match at 3-3.

The opening 15 minutes also featured three goals. Snoeijs pushed the Toffees ahead with class in the 14th minute, corralling the ball in the Chelsea penalty box before slotting it past Chelsea keeper Livia Peng for the 2-1 lead just before halftime.

Chelsea drew first blood in the sixth minute. Sandy Baltimore forced a save from netminder Courtney Brosnan before Erin Cuthbert pounced on the rebound and drilled it into the bottom-left corner to give Chelsea the 1-0 lead.

But the Toffees pulled even just moments later, as the ball took a deflection off of Peng before bouncing over the line just inside the left post.

Peng earned redemption in the 10th minute, diving in front of Kelly Gago at the six-yard box to deny a clear goal-scoring opportunity.

Chelsea supporters were the first to set up camp, filing into their seats adorned in Blues kits and waving their Lion flags vigorously. But the Toffees faithful showed up in London as well, making the journey from Liverpool to watch Everton make history in the first-ever World Sevens Football tournament on British soil. Supporters from both clubs serenaded each other with a rendition of “Hey Jude” before the opening kick.

The energy continued with the player walkouts, with Chelsea starters busting out flips and break dance moves before Everton set up a photo montage of their own entrances.
