Crowd favorite Benfica’s championship hopes end after a 3-1 loss to the women from Manchester
ESTORIL, PORTUGAL (22 May, 2025) — Manchester United became the final team to book a place in the semifinals of the first edition of W7F after a commanding 3–1 win over SL Benfica, in front of a lively home crowd. Celine Bizet got things going early with a rocket shot into the top corner, and Simi Awujo stole the show with a clinical brace, one on each side of half-time. United were in control from the off, with their quick transitions and sharp finishing proving too much for the hosts to handle. Benfica showed flashes of life through Andreia Norton, who pounced on a loose ball to pull one back, and substitute goalkeeper Lena Pauels made amends for an earlier error with a string of solid saves. Unfortunately for the Portuguese side, the damage was done, and it’s United who march on, while Benfica look to salvage a win in their final group match against Roma.
